Twitter Explodes

Twitter

Suddenly Twitter  is all the rage. Today it’s the #1 topic on  Technorati which a blog search engine/hype tracker.
Twitter was a side project from the guys who started Odeo a podcast sharing/listening/recording site that I thought was very useful. Unfortunately the masses never caught on and they have suffered both financially and from a small user base.
The main idea of Twitter is to share "what are you doing right now". You can share via the Twitter page, through instant messaging or via SMS. I have to admit I thought this was a horrible web app initially. Who would want to publicize to the world their activities? In the last month….everybody.
The usefulness of Twitter is in the various commands. You can announce your location with L: command. You can do Whois searches on users via sms and turn on and off alerts. You can follow users via RSS and send private messages. Since the addition of these commands various Twitter mashups have appeared. Twittervision shows Twitter alerts and the users location on a Google map.
So I think it’s safe to say Twitter is past the early adopter stage and in the the first big wave of growth. Let’s see where this technology goes.
